Laura Steiner.jpgLaura's Story

My story starts back in 2007 when I was 19 and just beginning nursing school. I suddenly got very sick with an infection called C-diff and my doctor did not understand why. Fast forward a few years, and although the infection was gone, I still had an extremely sensitive GI tract. I learned a little about Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis in my classes for school, but never really put 2+2 together.

In 2010, I had my first colonoscopy and the doctor said he saw inflammation but he could not diagnose it. I had abdominal pain, occasional nausea, and diarrhea but I could still function. However, rather than getting better, my symptoms continued to get worse and in addition to all the discomfort, I lost about 30 pounds very fast. In 2012, I found a different GI doctor who did another colonoscopy and when I woke up, she told me I had moderate inflammation throughout my entire colon, which was diagnosed as ulcerative colitis.

I have been on a few different medicines for treatment, and started Remicade infusions in 2014, which put me into remission. I am now fortunate enough to be continuing my journey by becoming a pediatric nurse practitioner, planning to specialize in IBD. I look forward to being able to help others who are going through the same journey I have been through!
