Most of you know my familiy's long standing history with Crohn's Disease nd Ulcerative Colitis. We have worked tirelessly over many years to raise funds for research that will eventually find a cure. However, in August of 2014, we endured an unimaginable tragedy with the sudden and senseless death of my beloved husband Richard. It is in his honor that I have changed our team name from "The Klapman Family" to "Team Redbeard - In Loving Memory of Rich Klapman". Redbeard was a nickname that Rich was fond of.
One year he answered the call for the need of male counselors at our annual Camp Oasis, a one week sleep away camp set up to meet the needs of children suffering with IBD. He would investigate ahead of time what the theme days would be , and we would shop at many stores until he found just the right outfits for a pirate, or clown or disco dancer. In addition, he would shop for games and toys that were age appropriate for his group, which were always the youngest boy campers. Our basement began to look like a novelty shop.
But it was not all fun and games. Many lessons were taught within the bunks at night. He told me many a story how he intervened when the boys would make fun of another who was wearing a diaper, or had an ostomy bag. He loved his campers and they loved him back. His dedication earned him the honor of " #1 Male Counselor of the Year".
