70.3 Ironman Miles Closer to a Cure
August 2018: An Ironman 70.3 in ~370 days from now. I signed up. What was I thinking?!?
In October 2016, I set out to learn to run a half marathon, all in the name of doing something. Anything to help further the mission to cure Crohn's disease--and disease that wreaks havoc on so many lives, including my husband Jason's.
Over the course of the less than two years, I went from being unable to run a mile straight to conquering half marathons, trail races, and long, humid August training runs. On October 7, 2018, just two years after I took my first "running steps", I will conquer the Chicago Marathon with Team Challenge, also in my quest to help find a cure. In just two years I've raised over $15,000, met other caregivers and patients who have been an amazing source of support and knowledge, and found inspiration and motivation at every turn.
But as I write this, without even having completed my upcoming marathon with Team Challenge yet, I knew I had to sign up for the Ironman Maine 70.3 in August 2019. This will be a huge undertaking that will test everything I have, but it will all be worth it because your donations will not only motivate me to the finish, but they will help us get closer to the cure.
About Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis
Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are both major categories of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD). IBD affects an estimated 1.6 million Americans. These chronic diseases tend to run in families and they affect males and females equally. Crohn’s disease is a chronic inflammatory condition of the gastrointestinal tract and may affect any part from the mouth to the anus. Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory condition limited to the colon, otherwise known as the large intestine.
The Mission of the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America is: To cure and prevent Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis through research, and to improve the quality of life of children and adults affected by these digestive diseases through education and support.
