Bill & Dan's 2019 Crohn's & Colitis Cure Fundraising Page
Hello and welcome to our 2019 Team Challenge fundraising page! Bill and I are back in orange and once again taking the fight to Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis! This year we are headed to Little Rock, Arkansas for the Big Dam Bridge century race on September 29th, 2019. This 100-mile race will be another difficult undertaking but the training season has begun and with your help we will all have another successful year and get one step closer to a cure. Please consider joining our cause and making a tax-deductible donation.
9.5 years ago, I fell very ill and was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis, a disease I had never even heard of, and it changed my life forever. Just three days before I was to commission as an officer in the Marine Corps that dream was over immediately, I lost over 30 pounds in less than a month and was a recent college grad with no resume who couldn’t drive more than ten minutes without intense abdominal pain and a very urgent need to find an empty bathroom. For seven and a half years I went from severe UC to near remission and back again in an endless cycle of new medications, 4 physicians, depression and crushing defeat. After dealing with the pain, fear and life consuming misery, In June 2017, I was forced to have my large intestine removed. Over the next 10 months I would have 3 surgeries, an infection, a distended stomach, spend 25 nights in the hospital and live with an ostomy bag. I will now live the rest of my life with no large intestine and a modified small intestine to reclaim function of my bowels to some degree.
From the first day of diagnosis to today Bill has supported me at every turn, making sure I have lived and enjoyed my life. Those first few months were some of the hardest for me but Bill was there the whole time, by inviting me out, stopping in to check up on me and just calling to chat Bill made sure my spirits were kept up and I felt supported. For 9 years that has never changed; Bill has been by my side the entire time, quietly propping me up and helping me every step of the way. He’s never not had time for me and never asked for recognition. In 2017, Bill and I started raising money for a cure and this year will be our third time fundraising to defeat these diseases!
My experience pales in comparison to the people we have met through Team Challenge and the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation. We have met with people who’ve had more than 12 surgeries, yards of intestines removed, people who didn’t leave their houses for years and most of them are too afraid to talk about their silent disease. We’re shedding the light on these conditions and with the CCF we are researching cures, discovering treatments and helping children learn to cope with and manage their symptoms.
For individuals with UC and Crohn’s simple pleasures become excruciating experiences. Whether at home in bed or on a sunny beach, people with these diseases are always in some level of pain and Bill and I are asking that you help us help them. As we put the miles in your donations give us the motivation to keep pushing and driving the cause closer to a cure. Please consider making a tax-deductible donation to this great cause. With the help of compassionate individuals like yourself we know we can find a cure for these diseases and end the suffering of more than 1.8 million Americans and millions more world-wide. The CCF has an A rating on Charity Watch (https://www.charitywatch.org/ratings-and-metrics/crohns-colitis-foundation-of-america/303).
