Why I'm Running the 2019 Chicago Marathon for CCF
Hello Friends and Family,
On October 13th, 2019, I will run in the Bank of America Chicago Marathon, raising money on behalf of The Crohn's & Colitis Foundation (CCF). I would greatly appreciate your support in this endeavor, as I believe that both the funds and awareness from this challenge will benefit many others afflicted with Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD).
WHY RUN A MARATHON?
Before deciding to run this marathon in support of CCF, I spent time contemplating if this was the best way that I could make a difference for this cause. In doing so, I realized the powerful example that running this race sets for others who are affected by IBD, especially those who are newly diagnosed and anxious that this disease will permanently prevent them from engaging in various aspects of life.
The nature of this disease--its chronicity, physicial discomfort, and potential to lead to embarrassing episodes--means that being outdoors away from restroom access can be intimidating. One of my worst days, I had an episode at rowing practice, forcing my boatmates to turn around halfway through practice and sprint to the dock. The feelings that come with incidents like this one--embarrassment, frustration, disappointment of letting friends down--stick with you, and can make it easier to pass up opportunities where an IBD episode might occur rather than risk such encounters.
Completing 26.2 miles will be a significant accomplishment because I will reaffirm to myself that Crohn's has not taken away my ability to live an active lifestyle. With your support amplifying my voice, I hope that this can be an example to many others with IBD to keep pursuing their goals, especially those that seem scary in the face of this disease.
The Crohn's & Colitis Foundation is the largest non-profit, voluntary, health organization dedicated to finding cures for inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). The Foundation’s mission is to cure Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, and to improve the quality of life of children and adults who are affected by these diseases. The Foundation works to fulfill its mission by funding research; providing educational resources for patients and their families, medical professionals, and the public; and furnishing supportive services for those afflicted with IBD.
2019 is an especially important time to fundraise for CCF. Cutting edge research into the root cause of IBD, such as studies of the microbiome (bacteria in each person's body), is making great strides towards finding better treatments and cures.
Together, we can help individuals with IBD have access to better care, and equally importantly, feel that this disease does not have to limit aspirations. I am deeply grateful to those that join me in supporting this cause through making a contribution to my page.
