Ironman 2011 | Madison, WI
I have decided to make a difference in the fight against Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. On June 21, 2020, I will participate in the 70.3 Ironman Triathlon in Des Moines. For those unfamiliar to triathlon this particular race consists of a 1.2 mile swim, a 56 mile bike and a 13.1 mile run. This will be a big undertaking, but it will all be worth it because your donations will not only motivate me to the finish, but they will help us get closer to the cure. Won’t you please consider a donation today? Donations are tax-deductible as Team Challenge USA is an independent 501(c)3 nonprofit. My initial goal is to inspire 100 people to each donate only $70.30 (reference to the distance of 70.3 miles).
Why am I doing this? My wife Marcie and I have a dear friend, Darci Koehnk, who has been battling Crohn's disease for most of her adult life. Darci has faced an especially hard road for the past 7 years. What she and her family have endured would surely test most of us to our absolute limits. However, Darci has persevered and inspires those around her everyday. Her faith in God and her positive attitude are truly amazing! I decided that after completing my first Ironman in 2011 it had been long enough and I was ready for a new challenge. When the opportunity to join Team Challenge and raise funds for the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation came about it was an easy decision to join the fight. I felt that getting back into training for a triathlon with the purpose of finding a cure for my friend Darci and others like her who suffer from these unforgiving diseases was an opportunity not to be missed. My hope is that you'll support my efforts in whatever way you can, big or small, so that my training and "suffering" on race day will prevent the suffering of others, as new treatments and hopefully someday a cure for those with Crohn's and Colitis is discovered.
About Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis
Known collectively as inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis affects almost 1 in 100 people. They are painful, medically incurable diseases that attack the digestive system. Crohn's disease may attack anywhere along the digestive tract, while ulcerative colitis inflames only the large intestine (colon). Symptoms may include abdominal pain, persistent diarrhea, rectal bleeding, fever, and weight loss. Many patients require numerous hospitalizations and surgery. Most people develop the diseases between the ages of 15 and 35; however the incidence is increasing in children.
The Crohn's & Colitis Foundation is the largest non-profit, voluntary, health organization dedicated to finding cures for inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). The Foundation’s mission is to cure Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, and to improve the quality of life of children and adults who are affected by these diseases. The Foundation works to fulfill its mission by funding research; providing educational resources for patients and their families, medical professionals, and the public; and furnishing supportive services for those afflicted with IBD.
