100 Miles to Cures

This September, it will be ten years since my younger brother Phil left us. Despite living with the triple whammy of Crohn's disease, islet cell malinancy, and medically-induced diabetes, he still spent his last few years making a difference for other Crohn's & colitis patients by participating in multi-day cycling fundraisers called "Get Your Guts in Gear" which benefitted the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation and the National Ostomy Association. So what better way to honor Phil's memory on the 10th anniversary of his passing than to take on a century (100 mile) bike ride?
On September 10, 2022, I'll be participating in my 12th race with Team Challenge, the Maine Lighthouse Ride. I'm looking forward to trying a new endurance event and joining my teammates to raise funds and awareness to combat, and ultimately cure, these diseases. The Crohn's & Colitis Foundation has made so much progress the last ten years in funding research that has led to many more treatment options for patients and better care.
I hope you will join me and make a donation to this cause that is so near and dear to me - and is eliciting change for the 1.6 million Americans living with Crohn's and ulceratitve colitis.
About Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis:
Known collectively as inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis affect millions of Americans. They are painful, medically incurable diseases that attack the digestive system. Crohn's disease may attack anywhere along the digestive tract, while ulcerative colitis inflames only the large intestine (colon). Symptoms may include abdominal pain, persistent diarrhea, rectal bleeding, fever, and weight loss. Many patients require numerous hospitalizations and surgery. Most people develop the diseases between the ages of 15 and 35; however the incidence is increasing in children.
The Crohn's & Colitis Foundation is the largest non-profit, voluntary, health organization dedicated to finding cures for inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). The Foundation’s mission is to cure Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, and to improve the quality of life of children and adults who are affected by these diseases. The Foundation works to fulfill its mission by funding research; providing educational resources for patients and their families, medical professionals, and the public; and furnishing supportive services for those afflicted with IBD.
