From Running 13.1 to Cycling 40!

I first learned about IBD 20 years ago in 2002 when my sister Allie was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis right before her 9th birthday. Her diagnosis was my catalyst for becoming a pharmacist, wanting to help people with IBD, and find a cure. Allie is larger than life and she loves and feels so fiercely that she lights up a room. She is the best auntie to my kids Cameron and Hannah, and watching them together is amazing. This year I get to stand by her as she marries the love of her life. She was there for me almost 8 years ago when I got married and now it's my turn to return the favor. It only seems fitting that this year, 20 years after her diagnosis and the year she gets married, I dedicate my first season of Team Challenge Cycle to her.
I first joined Team Challenge in 2016 to complete my 1st half marathon in New Orleans. I completed another half marathon with TC the following year, and enjoyed training and fundraising for a cause that means so much to me and my family. This year I discovered how much I enjoy cycling, and knew that my fundraiser this year for the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation would be completed on the bike. I'm excited to complete the Maine Lighthouse Ride in Portland, Maine in September along side my fellow TC cyclists riding for a core for Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.
About Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis
Known collectively as inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis affect millions of Americans. They are painful, medically incurable diseases that attack the digestive system. Crohn's disease may attack anywhere along the digestive tract, while ulcerative colitis inflames only the large intestine (colon). Symptoms may include abdominal pain, persistent diarrhea, rectal bleeding, fever, and weight loss. Many patients require numerous hospitalizations and surgery. Most people develop the diseases between the ages of 15 and 35; however the incidence is increasing in children.
The Crohn's & Colitis Foundation is the largest non-profit, voluntary, health organization dedicated to finding cures for inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). The Foundation’s mission is to cure Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, and to improve the quality of life of children and adults who are affected by these diseases. The Foundation works to fulfill its mission by funding research; providing educational resources for patients and their families, medical professionals, and the public; and furnishing supportive services for those afflicted with IBD.
