For the third year in a row, we will pedal for a purpose at Cedar Rapids Spin4 Crohn's and Colitis Cures, an exciting and inspirational fundraising event that supports the mission of the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation which is to cure Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, and to improve the quality of life of children and adults affected by these diseases.
I will spin in honor of my beautiful daughter, Sarah, who was diagnosed with Crohn's disease in May 2016 at the age of seven.
We struggled for almost five months trying to figure out what was wrong with Sarah. She was losing weight, not eating well, and fought with fevers, fatigue, horrible stomach pain, and diarrhea. She had no energy to ride her bike or play with friends. She missed many days of school. With guidance from a family friend who is also a pediatric gastroenterologist at The University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital, Sarah was diagnosed with Crohn's disease. From her colonoscopy, we were told she had significant inflammation in the latter part of her intestine and some in her stomach. We sat stunned in the recovery room, taking in this information. Nothing could have prepared us for this diagnosis; we had no history of Crohn's disease in our family and Sarah was so young.
Sarah fortunately has more good days than bad, and for this we are thankful. Life with Crohn's means she endures many tests, scans, and doctor's visits. She returns to the hospital every five weeks for an intravenous infusion lasting three to four hours of a medicine that we have hoped will get and keep her in remission. She misses school and sometimes special events to receive this treatment on the precise schedule required. Through all of this, she continues to have a positive attitude. Every healthy day is a blessing. But each day carries a black cloud on the horizon--as a reminder of what can and likely will happen again. Unless we find a cure, she will have to live with this debilitating disease for the rest of her life.
Your tax-deductible donation will help support local patient programs, as well as important research projects. At least 80 cents per dollar raised by the CCF goes directly to research and patient support. This cause is very important to me and I appreciate your help as we fight for cures!
The more money we raise, the closer we will be to making life more manageable for Sarah and others who live with these invisible diseases every day.
Come join me at Burst spin and yoga studio for this event! I spin4 cures! I spin4 Sarah! She is incredible, brave, and determined!
About Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis
Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are collectively known as Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) and affect an estimated 3 million Americans. Crohn’s disease is a chronic inflammatory condition of the gastrointestinal tract and may affect any part from the mouth to the anus. Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory condition limited to the colon, otherwise known as the large intestine. There are no cures for these often painful and debilitating diseases.
The Mission of the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation is to cure Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, and to improve the quality of life of children and adults affected by these diseases.
